Layered Resiliance

We Create digital Product For Business

Layered Resilience is a speculative communal seating system designed for a dystopian future where safety becomes more valuable than sociability. In a world shaped by distrust, conflict, and rising crime, traditional seating that forces proximity feels unsafe and uncomfortable. This design responds to a new behavioural need: people want to gather, but only with controlled distance and elevated visibility. Inspired by the functional biomimicry of oyster mushrooms, the seating uses their layered, outward-spreading growth pattern to create three cascading tiers that offer different levels of rest while allowing individuals to maintain personal boundaries and visual control. The goal is not closeness — but cautious coexistence. The entire structure is crafted using rattan, chosen for its natural flexibility, breathability, and ability to form both organic curves and structural strength when woven. A free-standing outdoor version is designed for plazas and courtyards, while a wall-mounted indoor version supports communal lobbies or transit hubs — both sharing the same biomimetic logic of layered, adaptive growth. More than just furniture, Layered Resilience imagines how people might reclaim public spaces without sacrificing personal safety, reframing rest as self-preservation and gathering as an act of shared awareness rather than forced interaction.
